Bunions (Hallux Abducto Valgus)

Bunions (Hallux Abducto Valgus)

Bunions are enlargements of bone on the inside of the big toe joint. Causes of bunions include genetic predisposition, poor footwear and hypermobile/flattened feet. Bunions are a progressive deformity. The area will often become painful and red. Reducing the pronation can take pressure off the joint and help to relieve the pain. However, it will not change the size of the enlargement and an orthotic can only stop or slow down the progression of the deformity. In severe cases referral for a surgical opinion is necessary as only surgery can remove the enlarged bone. Bunion surgery coupled with an orthotic to correct the underlying pronation forces which contributed to the deformity, can lead to excellent results.
